Mr. Lopez focuses on the representation of nonprofit and tax-exempt organizations and their donors, with an emphasis on charitable gift planning.
Mr. Lopez is a member of the American Bar Association (Exempt Organizations Committee of the Tax Law Section), and the Bar Association of San Francisco. Mr. Lopez currently serves as Chair of the Tax Section of the State Bar of California’s Exempt Organizations Committee, a member of the Pacific Coast TE/GE Exempt Organizations Council, and is on the Advisory Board of the Luevano Foundation.
Mr. Lopez is an adjunct professor at Golden Gate University School of Law, where he teaches Tax-Exempt Organizations in the LL.M. in Taxation program. He has presented in the area of nonprofit law at the Center for Nonprofit and Volunteer Leadership and has conducted webinars and trainings on governance matters and tax issues facing nonprofit organizations. In May 2014, Mr. Lopez was invited to Washington, D.C., by the Taxation Section, State Bar of California, to present a paper on tax issues affecting donors and sponsoring organizations of Donor Advised Funds. The paper proposed guidance in this area and was presented to the Internal Revenue Service, United States Treasury Department, Joint Committee on Taxation, and the Senate Finance Committee.
Mr. Lopez is admitted to the bar in the state of California and is admitted to practice before the United States Tax Court.
Before joining Adler & Colvin, Mr. Lopez was an associate in the exempt organizations, tax, and family wealth groups at Coblentz Patch Duffy & Bass LLP in San Francisco. At Coblentz, he advised clients on the formation, taxation, and governance of nonprofit organizations. He also advised clients on all aspects of tax planning, with a focus on corporate and partnership taxation. While attending Georgetown, Mr. Lopez worked on the 4th Edition of Michael I. Sanders’ book, Joint Ventures Involving Tax Exempt Organizations (John Wiley & Sons, Inc.).
